Flowing westwards from Angoulême to the Atlantic at Rochefort, the River Charente is a lovely , slow moving, shallow river, passing many interesting towns and villages and traversing the famous region of Cognac Approximately at mid-point in the navigation are the renowned distillery towns of Jarnac and Cognac where it is possible to visit many distilleries with world famous names. Remember also to sample the local speciality Pineau des Charentes, an unusual aperitif made from grape juice and cognac. Towards the sea is Saintes, an ancient Roman town with some splendid old buildings, a ruined amphi-theatre, a good museum and all round a profusion of flowers. The river , and indeed the countryside, has changed little since the nineteenth century. The 150 km between Angoulême and Rochefort contains only 21 locks (all but the last 3 of which are normally worked but the boat’s crew). There is no commercial traffic on the river, which is clear and clean with excellent all year round fishing. There are numerous spots in which to swim. Spring, early summer and autumn are particularly pleasant on the Charente, especially in the upper reaches bordered by mixed woodlands, lush meadows or agricultural land and rolling hills. As the Charente is entirely a river navigation, villages along its course are usually a cycle ride or about 15 minutes walk away. You’ll find the effort well worthwhile to discover lovely places with old churches, châteaux and usually one or more charming restaurants.Cruising Suggestions Downstream from Angoulême you’ll need two weeks to reach Rochefort and return with time to explore in Cognac, Saintes and Savinien. In a week you cruise to Cognac and back to Angoulême.

ssurance :All our boats are fully insured, we know you will look after the boats, but on your arrival we will ask you to leave a refundable caution on safe return of the boat We suggest, as well, you take our cancellation plan insurance. |

icycles : To explore the sides of the canal and the villages you will have some great fun if you bring or rent some bicycles. (160 FRF/week) |

ontact : If during your cruise you want your family to get in contact with you for urgent messages, please leave the telephone number of the base with your relatives. In case of emergency we will get the message to you. |

ocumentation : To make the most of your holiday we will give you a little book with all the details you need for your cruise. |

amily : A boat holiday is an excellent family experience, specially your children will be delighted to spent a week on a boat. |

n time : You can take possession of your boat between 1 0-18 p. m, and we ask you to bring the boat back on your departure day between 8-9 a.m. We even advice you to be already at the base the evening before. We know people hate to leave but we need to prepare the boats for the next guests. |

uilts : Bed linen and cushion covers are on the boats, as well as either quilts err blankets. We supply pillow cases. You will find a complete set to wash your boat inside and outside. |
